Founded in 1981 by a group of pioneering, energetic women photographers
based in Southern California, WIPI (www.womeninphotography.org)
is a nonprofit organization with the goal of promoting the visibility
of women photographers and their work.
In 2000, with the support of historian Peter Palmquest and WIPI's
past director Nancy Clendaniel (1987-2000), photo artist Jean Ferro
at the helm as president, expanded its primary source of outreach
by switching from the bimonthly printed member publication F2 -
thereby establishing the nonprofit as a comprehensive online presence.
Since this decisive transition nearly 15 years ago, WIPI has become
a premier, online professional creative resource through competitions,
exhibitions and feature stories about women’s photographic
work.
Women In Photography International continues to present its Distinguished
Photographer Award, honoring woman photographers who have worked
professionally in the field for over 25 years. WIPI’s 2013
recipient was Editta Sherman, the celebrated 103-year-old photographer
who became known as "The Duchess of Carnegie Hall." Past
recipients include: Annie Leibovitz, Linda McCartney, Mary Ellen
Mark, Sylvia Plachy, Joyce Tenneson, and Grace Robertson. Carrie
Mae Weems, a WIPI Founding member, recently received the 2013 MacArthur
Genius Fellowship Award.
After 33 years in operation, WomenInPhotography.org now boasts a
unique, worldwide network of members, comprised of professional
photographers, gallery owners, photo educators, curators, artisans,
photography students and supporters.
