Karren Doll Tolliver
Tampa Bay, Florida

Karren Doll Tolliver is a photographic artist from the Midwest who has traveled extensively, amassing a variety of images from all over the United States and abroad. The Tampa Bay Area of Florida has been her home base since 1990.

After graduating with a degree in English from Mississippi University for Women in 1984, she began photographing seriously since 1985, fulfilling a need to create.

She moved to Jackson, MS, where she held several office jobs and part-time positions such as copy editor for a typesetter and secretary for a private school. In 1987 she married her current husband and moved to Germany where he was stationed in the armed forces.

While in Europe, Karren worked at the U.S. Army post as portraitist and photo educator in the photo studio, and as photographer for the post newspaper. She also worked with a nurse-recruiting firm while in Europe, traveling frequently both for business and for pleasure. Of course, Karren took advantage of every opportunity to shoot photos during this time.

Returning stateside in 1990, Karren found herself in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, where she has lived ever since. She again held temporary positions and secretary jobs until 1995. At that point she earned several computer certifications and made a successful run as a computer network systems engineer.

In December of 2000, Karren retired from the computer field in order to concentrate on and market her fine art photography.

Her craft is self-taught, with only cursory short courses and workshops in basic photography and darkroom techniques serving as her instruction.

She is an experienced studio portraitist and freelance photographer, available for commission work. In addition, she loves creating art photography because of the fact that, ultimately, the processes and final images are all her own.

She prefers 35mm photography, working primarily with available-light monochrome images since 1989. In the early 1990’s, she added hand-coloring and selective toning to her repertoire. In the mid 1990’s, she began working with blacklight photography and Polaroid transfer printing.

Her first solo exhibit was in 1993 in the historic Ybor City district of Tampa, Florida. Her next solo exhibit was at Salon Lillico in Tampa, Florida, in 1995. Since then, she has earned awards and shown artwork in various local venues. The image “Prayer” won first place in the national Luminos Photo Contest in 1994.

In 1999, several of her images were accepted at New Heights Gallery in Tampa. Currently, her photography can also be seen at the Robert Evans Gallery in New Port Richey, Florida, at the Pasco County (Florida) Arts Council, and at Lea’s Place Gift Shop in Tarpon Springs, Florida.
