  JUANITA RICHESON

Artist Statement and Bio

I am the daughter of two professional photographers. I identify closely with my mother, who had a difficult private life, was a single mother and died at age 42 of breast cancer. She was still able to advance to a highly respected professional position in charge of the photo division of a large international research institution. In 1966-67 she worked as a photographer in Vietnam, doing classified work related to the war's escalation.

I spent most of my youth traveling, managing bookstores, working as a free-lance arts writer, restoring a historic English wooden boat, sailing, and generally being a gypsy. After facing reality as a single mother, I went back to school to get an Art History degree and rediscovered photography.

For the last twelve years, I have trained as a professional photographer and completed several long-term conceptual fine art projects. My subjects have included the LAPD, the Santa Monica Pier, the historic Desire neighborhood in New Orleans, Outsider art memorials built at the scenes of violent accidents and murders across the American landscape, and most recently post-Communist Russia. My work examines the relationship between the powerful and the powerless from a distinctly feminine perspective.

In the last three years I have been exhibited with rapidly increasing success, both locally and nationally in juried solo and group shows. The photos shown here have been recognized with awards.
