Blanca
Berlin, photographer and galerist interviewing Sylvia Plachy
I
met three wonderful women in the opening of this exhibition, last week in Madrid!!! The
antecedent: In 2007 Sylvia Plachy was invited at Photo España with the
exhibition “De Reojo” (With the side glance) in the ”Circulo
Bellas Artes” (Fine Art Circle). Blanca Berlin, photographer and galerist
was so admired of Sylvia's work, that she decided to organize another exhibition
in Madrid.
Blanca
Berlin a professional photographer since 1983, decided in January 2007 to open
her own Gallery located in the center of Madrid, specializing in photography.
In
such a short time Blanca organized approximately 15 exhibits of Spanish and international
photographers. This beautiful exhibition space is now consolidated in the visual
and photographic panorama of Madrid.
Sylvia
Plachy's exhibit “Criaturas
frágiles” (Fragile beings)
is a delight to see. Her pictures exposed (mostly in B/W), taken in different
parts of the world and in different periods of her long career, are about animals,
that Sylvia defines as “fragile beings”.
Sylvia, the artist,
was so patient to illustrate the story and the spirit of each photograph to the
many people who went at the exhibition. Rosalind
Williams was also in attendance. Rosalind who moved from San Francisco to Madrid
many years ago was so kind to translate in Spanish Sylvia’s lecture. Rosalind
is not a translator as a profession! She is a very important photo historian and
independent curator, based in Madrid who heads the photography section of the
art magazine “Tendencias del
Mercado del Arte”. Blanca

It
has been a great opportunity to meet altogether Blanca, a photographer I already
knew when she joined my census about european women photographers (see in WIPI
website Archive 5, January-March 2001), a great artist as Sylvia, who received
in 2004 the WIPI Distinguished Award (see in WIPI website: F2 e Zine) and Rosalind,
deep expert of European and American photography.
……….Indeed
I was in a Madrid for an assignment about modern architecture, but I come back
home with a much more emotional experience!!
