Annual Conference
Women in the Middle: Borders, Barriers, Intersections
June
17 - 20, 2004 Milwaukee, WI Hosted by: University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Center for Women's Studies National
Women's Studies Association
The annual conference of the National Women's Studies Association (NWSA)
provides a forum for the exchange of ideas about the theory and practice
of Women's Studies and feminist education in academic institutions and
elsewhere. In 2004, we will gather in Milwaukee -- in the Midwest, a place
of geographic, cultural, and political intersection in the United States
-- for the 25th annual meeting of the NWSA. As we look ahead to the 2004
conference, we are acutely aware that we stand at a turning point. It
is a time of transition, a time when borders are shifting or being erased
altogether, a time when old barriers are being destroyed even as new barriers
are being erected.
The general conference theme, Women in the Middle: Borders, Barriers,
Intersections, reflects the many ways that women may find themselves caught
in the middle-between generations, between demands of family and work,
or aging parents and children, between various aspects of their own identity,
between groups in which they are active -- but also highlights ways in
which women have used their position creatively. In keeping with the idea
of borders, barriers, and intersections, the embedded conference theme
is Coalitions and Conflict Across Difference. Some of the richest conversations
among feminists have been about building bridges across differences, yet
these differences still present significant points of conflict and struggle.
Contemporary events, such as global tensions presented as conflicts between
cultures, or welfare reform employing class, racial and gendered stereotypes,
make questions of the relationship between feminism and difference even
more pressing. The embedded conference will provide multiple forums to
contemplate differences and the oppressions they create as they relate
to feminisms at the international, national, and local levels, striving
to bring together theory and action.
