Laura
Bennett Pearland, Texas, USA
As
a mother of nine children, Laura Bennett spent many years moving to the rhythm
of others and keeping order in an otherwise chaotic world. During that time she
earned B.A. degrees in Journalism and in Studio Art from Humboldt State University
in California. Her Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Photo / Digital Media
is from the University of Houston, where she occasionally teaches as adjunct Fine
Art faculty.
Bennett’s work has been exhibited in galleries nationwide.
In 2008 her body of work titled Infectious Myth was awarded a grant from the Barbara
Deming Memorial Fund. Myth is an ongoing narrative involving four female archetypes
that Bennett herself created – Agnes, Eleanor, Edith and Helen. Each represents
a transitory phase in the female life cycle. A recent exhibition title Thrive
at Diverse Works in Houston included Bennett’s work from her new Dames of
Anatomy series, a body of work that cleverly combines old glass negatives with
medical illustrations.
Bennett’s work has been published in Christopher
James’ The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, SHOTS Dreams Issue,
Fotophile, and Photography Forum’s The Best of Photography Annual 2008,
among others. She currently has three pieces in the Texas National Juried Exhibition,
one of which won Honorable Mention.
Bennett uses an old Gundlach 8 x 10,
a 4 x 5 pinhole, a Mamiya RB67 and a 4 x 5 Press King Camera, as well as a Holga
and an Agfa Clack. She makes platinum palladium and silver gelatin prints, but
also scans old glass negatives, film, objects, antique medical illustrations and
found negatives for transformation in the computer.
