TRISH
SIMONITE Trish Simonite was born in Norfolk, England,
and moved to Texas in the late 1960s. She began her studies at The University
of Texas at Austin, but finished and received her B.F.A and M.F.A. from the University
of Texas at San Antonio. She holds the rank of Professor at Trinity University,
San Antonio, where she teaches photography and digital art. The majority
of her photographic series reflect her interest in the landscape and in nature.
Her most recent series deal with the history of the landscape, albeit in a metaphorical
and poetic manner. Other themes that recur in her work are time, and memory.
Her introduction to photography was in an experimental photography course
and she continues to push her work in new and different directions. Influenced
by Buddhist philosophy she often juxtaposes elements that speak about permanence
and transience, the past and the present. Her work is rooted in and refers
to traditional photographic practice; however, she uses contemporary tools to
capture and create the images. Like many contemporary artists, her artistic practice
and methodology varies to suit each body of work, sometimes shooting and printing
straight, unmanipulated images; or sometimes manipulating her photographs.
Simonite's photographs have been exhibited in group and solo shows
in Europe and throughout the U.S.A., including: Alameda Ayer at the McNay Art
Museum, San Antonio; Chimera, Norwich Art Center, Norwich, England; Seeing Through
the Century, Carlisle Photo Festival, Carlisle, England; Honky Tonk, BlueCoat
Gallery, Liverpool, England; Re-Bloom: Dialogues in Exuberance, Victoria Price
Fine Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Beauty, a Women in Photography International on-line
exhibition; Women Photographers in America, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery,
Los Angeles, California; Liminal Britain, University of North Texas, Denton, Texas;
and Binary Articulations, George A. SPIVA Art Center, Joplin, Missouri.
Her
work has been published in books and magazines including: An Introduction
to the Art of Photography; Art at Our Doorstep: San Antonio Writers and Artists;
A Creative Approach to Photography and Zoom Magazine. Recent on-line publications
include features on the TICKA Arts and Aint-Bad Magazine sites. Collections holding
her work include: The Peter Palmquist Collection of Women Photographers and the
Women in Photography International Archive, Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript
Library, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut; the Harry Ransom Humanities
Photography Collection, University of Texas at Austin; The Witliff Collection,
San Marcos, Texas; The San Antonio Museum of Art; The Grace Museum, Abilene, Texas;

UPDATE - JULY 2015 - MARCH 2016
In the summer of 2015 Trish Simonite received a Trinity University
summer stipend and spent a month taking photographs along the coast
of Norfolk, England. The new series is called The Happisburgh Project.
It addresses the history of this ancient landscape as well as Trish’s
own very personal memories of this site where her parents had a
bungalow and where she has spent many summers. Happisburgh is a
small village on the coast of Norfolk where in 2013 mud flats were
uncovered on the beach due to coastal erosion. Ancient footprints
were found in the mud alongside the teeth of small mammals and other
artifacts. The footprints proved to be circa 800,000 years old and
are the oldest evidence of human habitation outside of Africa. A
few of the photographs from this series will be in an exhibition
at Gray Matters Gallery in Dallas in the Ticka Arts Exhibition in
February 2016.
Grande, a Wisconsin company known primarily for making cheese awarded
Trish a commission. Overland Partners, an architecture firm in San
Antonio, designed their new headquarters and artists were commissioned
to make work specifically for the new complex. Trish produced four
48”x48” still life images depicting the four seasons.
In September 2015 Trish Simonite began a phased out retirement from
teaching at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. She will continue
to teach a full load of courses every spring semester through May
2018 when she will retire. She plans to spend her time off traveling,
photographing, dancing, reading, gardening, spending time with family
and friends.
One of Trish’s goals for the future is to procure an exhibition
with her three talented children: Peter Simonite (a director of
photography and cinematographer, Nick Simonite (a photographer),
Francesca Simonite (a photographer currently pursuing an M.F.A.
in photography); and her husband, Richard Simonite, who makes contemporary
jewelry.
UPDATE - MARCH 2016 - APRIL 2017
For
the last year Trish has been working on commissions. Last year she
produced 14 large-scale still life images that were approximately
90"x66.5". They were printed on film that and applied
to a series of window in a hallway in the Transplant Unit of University
Health System Hospital in the Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.
In addition she produced 23 smaller scale 20"x13" still
life images that were printed on dibond also for The University
Health System Hospital. She is currently working on a new commission
for the hospital that will also be still life images to be printed
on film and applied to a series of 10 sets of doors.
Trish's three children who are all lens-based artists (two
photographers and a cinematographer) continue to be very successful
photographers and cinematographers. You can find a link to their
websites on the donor wall.
Peter Simonite's movie he was director of photography on
"Voice From The Stone" starring Emilia Clarke from "Game
of Thrones" was released in April 2017:

Nicholas has been working on some major commercial projects
in Texas and across the USA. Peter and Nicholas also just completed
a music video:

Francesca Simonite graduated with her MFA in Photography
from Brooklyn College in New York in May 2016 and is currently teaching
photography at a Middle School in Austin, Texas. She is looking
forward to working on her photography during an artist residency
this June in Brazil.
Trish Simonite taught this spring at Trinity University in
San Antonio, but is looking forward to travels and working on her
own projects over the summer and fall and will be retiring in May
2018.
