Kathleen
T. Carr
Kathleen
T. Carr is
a professional
and fine art photographer, teacher, author, and a former Polaroid Creative Uses
Consultant. She received a B.F.A. (cum laude) in Photography from Ohio University
in 1970, and then studied extensively with Minor White and worked for Aperture.
Her award-winning work has been exhibited internationally, purchased for private
collections, and has appeared in numerous books and periodicals. Her three books
are Polaroid Transfers; Polaroid Manipulations (Amphoto Books 1997 & 2002),
and To Honor the Earth (Harper San Francisco, 1991). Selected periodicals include
Outdoor Photographer (featured artist), National Geographic Traveler, Islands,
Decor, (featured artist), Photo Vision, (featured artist), Esquire, Art of Northern
California and American Art Collector. Kathleen was a staff photographer at the
Findhorn Foundation, Scotland, and Esalen Institute, Big Sur, CA during the ‘70s
and ‘80s. At Findhorn she was the photographer and photo editor for the
books The Findhorn Garden, Faces of Findhorn (Harper & Row, 1975, 1980) and
The Findhorn Family Cookbook (Shambhala, 1981). Kathleen received a National Endowment
for the Arts fellowship in 1991. She has resided in the Captain Cook area of
Hawaii since 2006, and her current passions are black and white digital infrared,
photographing and filming underwater, and the digital darkroom. In 2014 she released
a 28-minute DVD, Whale Journey: Connecting with the Humpback Whales.
“Kathleen’s
pictures, with their multiple layers of image and meaning, are also exquisite
evocations of life, nature, and the human form. Often her pictures are ethereal
journeys to places of beauty. She may take us on a walk through her neighborhood,
a hike into the woods, or on a distant voyage. Kathleen’s pictures are intimate
interactions, quiet conversations shared.” --Jim Alinder, author, gallery
owner and noted authority on fine art photography

UPDATE
- JULY 2015 - MARCH 2016
In 2015 Kathleen co-founded the South Kona Artists Collective (SOKO).
SOKO is a collective of individual professional artists, painters,
potters, photographers, sculptors, jewelers and glass artists, who
have come together to generate opportunities for fine artists to
share their work through an annual studio tour, exhibitions, collaborations
with local businesses and more. Two annual artists studio tours
and several exhibits have met with great success, receiving funding
from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the
National Endowment for the Arts. www.sokoartists.com.
Kathleen also published a small book, Dolphins: Kindred Spirits,
featuring 37 of her best underwater dolphin photographs, and a DVD
on the gray whales in Baja. She is now represented by the Kailua
Village Artists Gallery in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, where her underwater
photographs and hand colored infrared landscapes are on exhibit.
