Carolyn C. Meltzer

Images have always been the most powerful force in my life. I picked up a camera as a kid and loved looking at the world through its lens. As a neuroadiologist and imaging scientist, I have developed new ways to examine the brain for clues to human behavior, health and disease. Visualizing the delicate, highly meaningful patterns and interactions of tiny brain structures has greatly influenced my parallel life as a photographer. In nature, I also look for meaning in small forums. The branching pattern of leaves…..the curvilinear ridges the ocean carves in the sand…. the way light paints a soft glimmer across a droplet of rain. My camera lens allows me to explore, embrace, and share my emotional connection with the natural world and also to capture the essence of how humans have used their brains to both revere and destroy that world.

What I most want people to take away from my photographic work is to have sensed one small slice of their environment in a new way: to see something they have not experienced before in quite the same way.

My photography has evolved to be all digital, take advantage of only natural light, and emphasize vibrant, close-up and often abstract and insular views of the natural world through a shallow depth of field. Often it is a world easily overlooked. The work is printed on archival watercolor paper, which helps to enhance its realistic and simultaneously surrealistic qualities.

I have been fortunate to have my photography featured in multiple venues, including solo and multiple artist shows and juried exhibits, including my current participation in the group exhibit “Process” at Denise Bibro’s Chelsea gallery in New York. My work also resides in private collections in Atlanta, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, New York, and Charlotte.
