Catherine E. Money

There is a magical quality residing within the arms of photography, and I have been held captive by its power most of my life. The ability to record a moment, to still it, and hold it in suspense for all time, has been at the core of my fascination of this incredible art form. Over the many passing years, I have strived for an intimacy, a sort of friendship with my camera and my subjects. Hoping to discover something unseen, uncovered, like a newfound treasure. Using my camera as a bridge between myself and the world, I am looking to capture the essence of my subject or experience, to whisper a story or reveal an inner beauty that quietly rests at its side.

Searching for transformative light, and a moment of memorability, my camera has allowed me little windows into new worlds, both real and imaginative.Photography has been kind to me, teaching and inspiring me to question my perceptions, to expand my visual boundaries and acceptance of my minds eye. It has demanded of me an honesty and a purpose. An intimacy. Never denying me the opportunity to do more or become more. I have learned much from my camera. I have learned that life is but a series of incredible moments, filled with amazing people and places. I have spent much of my life, wandering metaphorically, working to create an authentic voice. As each day begins anew, new images are waiting to be born. To be brought into this world, no longer latent, but alive, and thriving, awaiting a new awareness of truth and beauty.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree in Illustrative Photography
Brooks Institute of Photography
Santa Barbara, CA USA

EXPERIENCE

Following my formal education, I trained in Chicago, Illinois, first as a photographic assistant with many top commercial photographers, such as, Tom Petroff, Sandy Hedrich, Kathy Sanders, Robert Sacco. And then worked independently as a freelance commercial photographer, photographing food and product with a client base of Kraft, Hershey’s, Campbell’s, Lands End and Sears to name a few.

Along with photography, I am a published poet with works in both the United States and The United Kingdom. As an active ambassador for the International Society of Poets, I am the recipient of the Silver Metal Award from the International Society of poets and named “Who’s Who in 2004, 2005 and 2006 from the same organization.

Relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles with my husband and daughter, and reinvented myself and my involvement with photography. I have continued to work for twenty years here as a freelance photographer, shooting both product and people. Currently, I have segued primarily into fine art portraiture and fine art photographic projects.

UPDATE - AUGUST 2014 - APRIL 2017

TELEPATHY

As I was working on updating WIPI's final files, I realized I hadn't heard from Catherine and remembered she had a very serious car accident some time ago. I've been incredibly busy with the WIPI transfer to the Beinecke Library at Yale and time slipped by quieckly... and just as I was thinking about her, I received this wonderful email. I asked Catherine if I could pulblish it and she agreed. Congrautlations to Catherine for being able to overcme this very tragic situation.

Hi Jean,
Thank you so much for making the effort to get in touch. I must apologize for getting back to you so very late. I have spent the last 16 months of my life recovering from a terrible accident. I was hit and run over by a truck while crossing the street in December of 2015.

It has been a horrific journey from then until now. I am so very grateful to be alive! Somehow, by the graces of all the powers that be, I have miraculously survived! I have no memory of my first week in the ICU. I had my spleen removed, severe internal bleeding, two surgeries on my pelvis, which was broken in several places, and have had my left arm rebuilt. I spent 3 months in a nursing home after 3 weeks in the hospital and finally was able to come home with in-homecare, to begin another phase of healing. Over the past 16 months, I have had occcupational and physical therapies and have suffered from PTSD. I had to learn how to walk again and how to use my arm. I am finally getting back on track and am continuing to work hard every day to regain my mobility and independence. I am doing well, all things considered. I have finally gotten enough strength in my arm to hold my camera and have slowly started to photograph again. I cried the first time I was able to take another picture!

It has been the hardest journey of my life. But through it all, I have learned so much. Patience, humility, gratitude and perseverence.

I took a quick look at my bio and statement. There are a few minor changes I could make, but all in all, it is still current and up to date. Lets just leave things the way they are for now. Thank you so much for being the amazing person that you are! I hope that life has been kind to you and that we will have the opportunity to see one another in the days to come.

So many heartfelt thanks,

Catherine Money626.483.5476c.
